Southern California Faces Record-Breaking High Temperatures Just One Week After Severe Winter Storm.
After enduring heavy downpours that caused flooding across sections of the city, LA is now confronting abnormally hot weather for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Readings
On Friday midday, the mercury climbed to 91°F (33°C) in the city center, according to meteorologists. This breaks the previous daily record for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was recorded in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were labeled on forecast charts for the region.
Public Health Advisories
The weather service stated that Friday's heat posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their guidance suggested:
- Staying hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a car.
An Extreme Weather Swing
This sharp rise in mercury follows closely after a massive winter storm that pummeled the region earlier in the week. That event unleashed high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to the mountains, triggering mudslide risks for countless residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Temperatures Easing
Looking ahead a cooldown is coming. Temperatures were expected to drop to around 61°F (16°C) in downtown LA by overnight.
Several cities that reached 90°F included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were expected to experience the upper eighties.
In the coming days, central Los Angeles can expect temperatures in the 80s, with a further cooldown likely for the week ahead.
