European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
