American Representative Preparing to Meet Zelenskyy, European Officials in Berlin

During a significant diplomatic push, Donald Trump’s special envoy will travel to meet with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders in Berlin this weekend, as US officials advocates for a definitive strategy to conclude the protracted war.

Peace Negotiations and Truce Efforts

Germany stated it would host American and Kyiv representatives for preliminary consultations focusing on a possible ceasefire, prior to a larger meeting involving EU officials and President Zelenskyy scheduled for Monday. In a national address, Zelenskyy personally confirmed the upcoming meeting with the US representative Steve Witkoff: “A key aspect, I will be meeting with representatives from President Trump, and there will additionally be meetings with our European partners, with several officials, concerning the foundation of peace – a political agreement to terminate the war,” he declared.

Russian Demands for a Truce

Meanwhile, Russian foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov reaffirmed that Russia would exclusively give its blessing to a ceasefire once Ukraine’s military have withdrawn from parts of the eastern oblast they still control. Ushakov stated that Moscow’s security forces and national guard troops would stay in sections of the Donbas region should the area becomes a DMZ under a proposed peace plan – a stipulation considered a non-starter for Ukraine.

Nighttime Attacks Target Ukraine's Infrastructure

Amid a related development, Russian forces struck multiple oblasts in Ukraine overnight, concentrating on the nation’s energy and port infrastructure, as stated by President Zelenskyy. He reported the assaults employed in excess of 450 unmanned aerial vehicles and 30 missiles. With temperatures near freezing, the minister of internal affairs, Ihor Klymenko, reported more than a million residents were left in the dark.

Additionally, an strike on the port city of Odesa led to storage facilities being set ablaze, according to Ukrainian deputy prime minister Oleksiy Kuleba. Local officials reported that two people were injured in attacks on the wider region.

Defense and Aid Updates

Amid mounting concerns about the Russian threat, Germany said it will send a military contingent to Poland to support a project to fortify the country’s border with Belarus. Poland, a staunch ally of Ukraine, unveiled intentions last year to enhance a long stretch of its frontier. The primary role of the deployed personnel will be “engineering activities,” a defence ministry spokesperson said.

In a different incident, about 480 passengers were evacuated from a rail service traveling between the city in Poland of Przemysl and Kyiv following authorities received a report concerning a threat. Nobody was injured, and officials provided no further details on the specific threat. Poland's authorities remain on heightened alert due to multiple incidents to disrupt trains on the route linking Warsaw to the border with Ukraine.

In other news, Ukrainian naval officials alleged Russian forces of deliberately attacking a commercial Turkish vessel transporting cooking oil to Egypt with a drone on Saturday. The statement said the vessel ‘VIVA’ was struck but able to continue its journey, with none of the 11 crew wounded.

Finally, Ukraine received 114 detainees freed by Belarus on Saturday, per the Ukrainian PoW coordination centre. The released individuals are to get medical attention, and those nationals of Belarus who wish will be transported to Poland or Lithuania.
