Fear appears in numerous ways. At times it's a possessed plaything or a spirit-infested building. In other instances it's a unquiet ghost making itself known. However the scariest kind of fear is often not attached to an object or a place, but instead a human being. Sometimes, the most frightening creature isn't lurking beneath your mattress. It dwells in your mind.
The Inner Demons of Requiem For A Dream
This is the case with Darren Aronofsky's 2000 cult classic Requiem For a Dream, observing its 25-year mark. Although certain viewers claim it isn't a horror film, many maintain it absolutely is. Certainly not, it omits an evil force pulling someone from their sleep in the evening, or a Ouija pointer moving over a talking board by ghostly fingers. Yet Requiem For A Dream is all about the demons that inhabit of us, and the awful deeds human beings controlled by substance abuse commit against themselves — and their loved ones — in their quest to survive.
Harry's Descent
The film introduces central figure Jared Leto's character when he endeavors to remove a television set from his elderly mother, Sara Goldfarb. It's obvious Sara cares for her child, however at that instant they're introduced, the young man's personal struggles are already coming out to play. Sara has locked herself within a storage space to escape Harry, who is hoping to pawn the TV for funds enabling him to acquire the story's primary villain: heroin.
Harry's eyes are enlarged, desperate, irises expanded. His shirt is saturated with the cold sweat due to narcotic craving. Sara glances using the lock opening of the small room, watching. This fails to be her sweet, handsome, loving son. This is the monstrous creature that emerges from his personality from time to time. Sara knows if she waits long enough, the turmoil will end, and the actual Harry will return to her.
This is not the premier instance Harry has pawned his parent's set. To avoid the ongoing stealing, she's chained the television to the heating unit, and keeps the opening tool to the padlock on her person inside the small room. When Harry discovers this situation, he immediately takes a page from the typical manipulator's guide, yelling, "Jesus, what's your goal? Are you attempting to compel me to ruin Sara's TV? And ruin the heater as well, and possibly demolish the complete home, Mother? Is that your aim?"
Sara silently passes the key for the lock beneath the entrance.
It's obvious Harry feels guilty, yet his guilt is surpassed by the anxious suffering due to intense narcotic need. The moment he wheels the aging TV set outdoors, where his close companion Marlon Wayans' character has been waiting, any thoughts of shame disappear. Subsequent to moving the TV across numerous streets, Harry and Tyrone hock it for money. We don't even see them acquire the narcotic, and the expression "the substance" is not at any point verbalized during the whole movie. The sole representation are various brief tight frames of the substance being heated in a small container, subsequently administered. A mysterious sound exhales. The monster within Goldfarb is satisfied.
For now.
The Mother's Own Battle
At the same time, the unfortunate mother has traipsed across town to get her entertainment system restored, and quickly appears obvious that she experiences a slight dependence personally. With her husband gone and her child transformed, the mother resorts to consumption and viewing for comfort. Other than Harry's inconsistent visits and the moments she spends outside tanning with fellow females in her apartment building, Sara doesn't get out much. The television acts as her view to the broader society, and she particularly enjoys of a bizarre gameshow-slash-infomercial featuring a weight-loss guru called Tappy Tibbons. She dedicates long periods consuming candy and observing the broadcast, where random viewers are periodically picked, winning money and a possibility to participate in the program, which also serves as an ad for the guru's diet products.
Finally, the mother receives a phone call letting her know she was picked to appear on a gameshow, that represents the most significant information she obtained over an extended period. She promptly establishes an objective: She desires to don the scarlet outfit she wore for her son's graduation ceremony, allowing her to dress in it while televised throughout production. After failing to achieve the garment's rear fastened, she determines to reduce her size. She attempts dietary changes, soon feels discouraged. Following the suggestion from a companion, Sara consults a medical professional, who promptly provides her with activating drugs for slimming.
Ambitions and Ruin
The two friends, though, are developing individual goals. The scheme requires acquiring quality narcotics, dilute it with additives to increase its volume more than its pure form, {and
